Neither His Holiness nor his office have been notified of any potential charges. The police submitted a sheet with charges they wish to pursue. As of Thursday, December 8, the court has not given them its approval to proceed.

FICTION: SPY CHARGES
FACT: SPY CHARGES
His Holiness the Karmapa, Ogyen Trinley Dorje, met with Chinese officials during his visit to Hong Kong

The anchorman of a major English-language TV station in India made this claim during a panel discussion on the Karmapa situation.

His Holiness the Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje, has never even visited Hong Kong.

It would appear there is some confusion as to who may have met with Chinese officials in Hong Kong. His Holiness the Karmapa has only left India once, to visit America, since arriving here from Tibet in 2002. Thaye Dorje, who uses the name of Karmapa for himself, has visited in the past and in fact is there now on a 15-day visit (February 13-28, 2011).

The Karmapa is in contact with Beijing.

Police claim that the Karmapa has been maintaining contacts with Beijing as part of a Chinese plan to control monasteries across the Himalayan region.  - Times of India Feb 7th

Enforcement directorate claims karmapa was in constant touch with Chinese authorities -Daily News and Analysis, 1st February
His Holiness the Karmapa is not a Chinese spy.

See: Karmapa is not a China spy: CNN-IBN, Posted on Feb 16, 2011 at 08:27pm IST: New Delhi: Tibetan spiritual leader Karmapa Ugyen Trinely Dorji has been given a clean chit on accusation of being a China spy.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the highest authority in Tibetan Buddhism, has expressed complete confidence in the Karmapa.

Since arriving in India, all HH Karmapa’s activities, movements, and visitors have been closely monitored by Indian police and intelligence officers. He must seek permission each time he wishes to leave his residence, even for visits to His Holiness the Dalai Lama. At no time during these eleven years have either the police or intelligence agencies suggested or furnished proof of such contact with Beijing.

On Feb 4th, the second-in-command of the Himachal Pradesh police, ADGP SR Mardi, who is actually conducting the investigation, stated categorically that there was no evidence regarding Chinese links of the Karmapa. -The Tribune, February 4

His Holiness' escape from Tibet was orchestrated by Beijing so he could become their agent in India.

The government believes Dorje is a “strategic asset” of Beijing, which “stage-managed” his headline-making “escape” from Tibet to India in January 2000.

“We are not saying he is a spy but is certainly a strategic asset for Beijing,” said an intelligence official. Major Indian daily newspaper, Feb 3.

In case anyone doubts what their position is on the matter, another major daily began using scare quotes around the word 'escape' when describing His Holiness' flight from Tibet.

His Holiness the Karmapa undertook personal dangers in fleeing Tibet, evading Chinese guards to seek religious freedom in India.

"The Karmapa's escape to India was the single most humiliating incident for China's Tibet policy in decades" quoted in Time Magazine, Feb 3, 2011

His Holiness the Karmapa’s escape from Chinese-occupied Tibet was a major embarrassment to China and landed a serious blow to China’s claims to legitimacy for its rule over Tibet. His Holiness the Karmapa was the first reincarnate lama that the People’s Republic of China had officially acknowledged. Yet, rather than allowing himself to be used to endorse China’s Tibet policy, His Holiness fled overland, by foot, horseback and jeep, crossing the Himalayas to freedom in India.

When His Holiness the Karmapa’s escape and his joyful first meeting with His Holiness the Dalai Lama became public, China’s oppression of Tibetans’ rights was dramatically highlighted the world over. This thoroughly discredited China’s claims that Tibetans were content under Chinese rule.

Several of those who stayed behind to cover for His Holiness’ absence were imprisoned by the Chinese.

FICTION: SIM CARDS
FACT: SIM CARDS
Chinese SIM cards seized.

"Chinese sim cards recovered from Dorje's monastery". This piece of fiction brought to you as a FRONT PAGE STORY! by an otherwise reputable publication. This comment is being put forward as the first bit of hard evidence establishing His Holiness' activities as a Chinese spy, yet it is a complete fabrication.

... important material and evidence including two-three Chinese SIM cards had also been recovered by the state police during investigations which may establish Karmapa's possible links with China.  –Usually reliable Indian daily, 6th February

The SIM cards recovered from the office of the trust are also under investigation. –One of top four Indian national newspapers, 6th February

No Chinese SIM cards were seized from the monastery during police raids.

In fact, at the time of the raid, a seizure memorandum was prepared listing all that had been removed from the monastery premises, precisely to prevent the later appearance of “evidence” that had not come from the site. Several witnesses were called from outside to attest to what was—and was not—taken. A copy was given to the Karmapa Office of Administration. On that report listing everything seized, there are no SIM cards whatsoever. No Chinese SIM cards. No Indian SIM cards. No American or Egyptian SIM cards either! A police inspector who was second-in-command for the Kangra police during the raid, verbally confirmed that no SIM cards were taken, as reported in an official statement by the Karmapa Office of Administration.
FICTION: CASH
FACT: CASH
His Holiness the Karmapa has several bank accounts.

A senior Himachal Pradesh police officer is quoted on the record in India’s leading English-language newspaper saying that although “Ogyen” had his Karmae Garchen Trust running from the Gyuto monastery, he had opened accounts in the name of Tsurphu, Dharam Chakra and Sherab Ling. - 8th Feb

His Holiness the Karmapa has no bank account.

In fact, he has never even walked into a store and engaged in a cash transaction of any sort.
The INR 1 crore seized in Una belonged to the Karmapa.

Many reports of the seizure of INR 1 crore juxtapose it with the confiscation of foreign currency from the Karmapa's residence at Gyuto Monastery,  implying that the two were linked, that this was black market money, and highly illegal.

The INR 1 crore (approx. $215,000) seized in the car of an Indian hotelier belonged to the seller of the land, not the Karmae Garchen Trust.

The seller had requested 1 crore INR cash payment towards the cost of the land, and the money had been given to his two representatives in Delhi, who were the two men arrested at the time, though they have since been released.

Paying for capital assets in cash is perfectly legal in India, and frequently done.

A large amount of the money found in the monastery was Chinese yuan.

As well as reporting wildly differing figures, many reports have focused on the amount of Chinese yuan rather than the currencies from other countries.

So far Chinese currency amounting to 11 lakh Yuan has been recovered, apart from currencies of 24 other countries.' –Leading Indian newspaper, 30th January

'the haul of Indian and foreign currencies from 25 countries... including Rs 77 lakh in yuans' –Leading Indian daily, 31st January

Chinese Yuan represent less than 15% of the total amount confiscated.

The foreign currency came from 25 different countries.

The largest single amount in any foreign currency was in US dollars, more than half the total. (It is also a fact that His Holiness the Karmapa is not a US spy.)

Police seize 9 crores ($1.9 million).

The press reports cite figures in amounts that vary greatly, but always greatly exceed the actual amount seized.  Zeenews reports 7 crores ($1.5 million). The Times of India's Feb 7 article puts the figure at 9 crore (1.9 million.)

The amount taken from the Karmapa Office of Administration is under 5 crore Indian rupees ($1,081,087)

The police seizure memos list the amounts of each currency removed. Our figures are taken from a copy of that report.

FICTION: LAND
FACT: LAND
Karmapa land deals are illegal and shady.

So many press reports say this that it is hard to even list them here.
Indian officials were officially informed of the plans to acquire land for a monastery and residence for His Holiness the Karmapa.

His Holiness the Karmapa has lived in temporary quarters in Dharamsala since his arrival in India in 2000. The Karmae Garchen Trust had been seeking to buy this plot of land in its own name, in order to construct a permanent residence and monastery for His Holiness, whose current living quarters measure 15′x15′. After the trust identified suitable land near His Holiness’ current residence, it informed the office of the District Collector of Dharamsala and sought and received preliminary approval to proceed with the purchase.

For more facts on the land purchase, see the Karmapa Office of Administration's official statement: Statement on ... Trust's Land Purchase, February 5, 2011

His Holiness the Karmapa has a monastery in Tawang.

A senior Himachal Pradesh police official is quoted as saying, "We have reasons to believe that some property has been bought in Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh and also some property in Uttarakhand." - 8th February

The Gyalwang Karmapa owns no property in Tawang or in Uttarakhand.

This is a particularly imaginative bit of fiction for several reasons. First the Tibetan Buddhists in Tawang are staunchly Gelug and Nyingma, making it a highly unlikely site for a Karma Kagyu monastery. But more importantly, Arunachal Pradesh has been the site of serious political turmoil, and is particularly sensitive because China lays claim to much of the state’s territory for itself. As such, the slanderous claim that His Holiness the Karmapa is seeking to establish monasteries feeds the fantasy that he is working for Chinese interests.

Tibetans can't buy land.

“Tibetans, who have a "refugee" status, cannot purchase any land.”  -Oneindianews,  February 7th

It is not easy, but Tibetan institutions can buy land in Himachal Pradesh.

It is possible for non-Himachalis, including Tibetan institutions, to purchase land but this involves a lengthy procedure of applications and permissions. Because it is so difficult to do, much of the media simply assumed  if Tibetans were buying land, it must be illegal. However, several Tibetan institutions in the Dharamshala area have bought land legally in recent years. The Karmapa’s Office of Administration was following the procedure in its attempt to purchase land to build a monastery for HH Karmapa.

FICTION: GYUTO MONASTERY
FACT: GYUTO MONASTERY
Gyuto Monastery belongs to the Karmapa.

“The Gyuto monastery, where Dorjee lives, belonged to the Dalai Lama, but he had handed it over to Dorjee" –Leading Indian daily, 31st January

"…exiled Tibetan leader 17th Karmapa’s Gyuto Tantric monastery"- Indian magazine, 31st January

"Tibetan spiritual leader 17th Karmapa’s Gyuto monastery" –Leadning Indian daily newspaper, 5th February

Gyuto Monastery belongs to a different Buddhist school, and is a temporary residence for the Karmapa.

Gyuto Monastery belongs to the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism; the Karmapa heads the Karma Kagyu school.

He occupies one building within the much larger monastic complex. His temporary living quarters on the top floor were allocated to him from the area traditionally reserved for His Holiness the Dalai Lama at the top of each Gelug monastery.

The Himachal Pradesh government has taken over the monastery of 17th Karmapa, Ogyen Trinley Dorje. Several reports recently have contained this factual error.
The Himachal government has taken over the land of Gyuto Monastery, which belongs to the Geluk School.

His Holiness the 17th Karmapa does not have a monastery in Himachal Pradesh.

Confusion seems to continue over who's who in Tibetan Buddhism.  The Geluk are one of the four schools of Tibetan Buddhism, the school to which His Holiness the Dalai Lama belongs. They are completely separate from the Karma Kagyu school headed by His Holiness the 17th Karmapa. His Holiness the Karmapa is a guest at Gyuto Monastery.

FICTION: RECOGNITION AS KARMAPA
FACT: RECOGNITION AS KARMAPA
Ogyen Trinley Dorje is not the Karmapa

“New Delhi today said Ugyen Trinley Dorje was no Karmapa’ -Major Indian daily newspaper, 28 January

"… the jury is still out on whether he is really the rightful claimant to the title of 17th Gyalwa Karmapa" –Major Indian business publication, 9th Feb

Himachal Director General of Police DS Manhas told TOI " It was in all probability done to get him legal sanctity as the 17th Karmapa, over which there is a controversy, as another monk, Trinley Thaye Dorje has also been anointed the 17th Karmapa"  -Leading Indian newspaper, 8th Feb.
Ogyen Trinley Dorje was officially recognised as the rightful Gyalwang Karmapa by those who are qualified to ascertain who is and is not the Karmapa.

When he was a boy, His Holiness the Karmapa, Ogyen Trinley Dorje, was recognized as the Karmapa by all four regents of the Karma Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. His Holiness the Dalai Lama also confirmed that Ogyen Trinley Dorje is indeed the Karmapa. A letter attesting to the four regents’ recognition of Ogyen Trinley Dorje and their acceptance of his confirmation of that fact was delivered to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the most universally respected figure in Tibetan Buddhism. However, one of the four regents later reneged on his recognition to challenge the consensus of the remaining three regents. This regent, Sharma Rinpoche, remains active today in promoting his own preferred candidate, Thaye Dorje, who is currently in Hong Kong.

The Karmapa is not a religious title granted by someone else, but is simply one individual who has been intentionally reincarnating life after life since the 11th century. As such, the 17th Karmapa is that person who is the reincarnation of the 16th Karmapa. To determine who is and who is not the Karmapa requires the ability to interpret a number of signs—including a prediction letter written by the Karmapa in a previous life—that indicate where the Karmapa has been reborn. Ultimately, it requires some ability to see into past lives. As a secular authority, neither Delhi nor any other government or legal system is in a position to make a determination as to who is and who is not the Karmapa.

The vast majority of Tibetan people in Tibet and in exile rely on the determination of a neutral party equipped with the spiritual capacity to ascertain such matters—His Holiness the Dalai Lama, who is revered not only for his level of spiritual development, but also for his impeccable ethical integrity. As such, they accept and revere His Holiness Ogyen Trinley Dorje as the Seventeenth Karmapa.

FICTION: CRIMINAL CHARGES
FACT: CRIMINAL CHARGES
Several of the Karmapa's close staff have been arrested.

Various papers have misreported the arrests that have taken place.

As one example, a major Indian daily wrote on 12 February: "But some people close to him are already arrested. They have close connections with Gyuto Monastery and its financial dealings."
The only staff member under arrest is an Indian monk called Rabgye Choesang who is the cashier.

Rabgye is an Indian Buddhist monk from Ladakh. In accordance with Indian government regulations, Rabgye Choesang, the Karmapa Office of Administration cashier, was unable to bank the foreign money from donations, so he stored it carefully in a locked trunk in his 'room.'

Because of the restrictions on his movements, the Karmapa has been living in temporary accommodation for eleven years. Many of his monks, including Rabgye, have no private rooms. They live in dorm rooms on the landings of the back stairs.

The Karmapa's staff contains criminals

A major Indian network flaunted this eye-catching headline, on 2nd February: "Karmapa aides have criminal past: Himachal DGP."

This lie is libelous and an obvious attempt to smear the Karmapa's reputation with flagrant lies. But the press in this case is hardly to be blamed, for they are quoting the on-the-record slander of the head of the Himachal Pradesh police.

The majority of Karmapa's staff are ordained Buddhist monks.

No one has a criminal record.

What to say?  They simply have no criminal record
